ROBIN PADILLA: Bare Essentials

His best trophy for his derring-do is himself, his checkered body.

"I can say that I have gone through hell and back," said Robin Padilla, figuratively speaking.

All for the sake of art in the truest sense of the words (because that praise, "for the sake of art," is one of the most abused phrases in showbiz) and other noble causes, Robin being noted for, so to speak, rushing in where angels fear to tread, such as 1) during a kidnapping incident perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf, Robin went to Mindanao to intercede for the hostages’ release; 2) during the shooting of blasting scene, Robin sustained third-degree burns and he has scars and keloids to show for it; and 3) while playing the title role in the GMA fantasy-adventure Joaquin Bordado (based upon the Carlo J. Caparas komiks-serial movie starring Ramon Revilla), Robin endured the painful process of tattooing (not permanent, though) all over his body and dared run naked in one scene.

He doesn’t want to cheat the public so he never uses a "double," never mind if it means putting life and limb at risk.

So what surprise is Robin going to spring on his fans (aside from gaining fat for his role as a boxer in the forthcoming GMA show Totoy Bato, also by Caparas, the TV version of the hit FPJ movie)?

In his new movie, GMA Films’ Sundo, Robin brings his fans to the "supernatural" level. Directed by Toppel Lee, the movie (with Katrina Halili, Rhian Ramos and Sunshine Dizon as leading ladies) is about the Filipino belief that when someone is near death, he’s usually fetched by a loved one who has gone earlier. Another welcome career move, isn’t it? [more…]
